This is a splint that is worn in the mouth at night to hold the lower jaw forward. This has the effect of pulling the back of the tongue further away from the back of the throat. In a lot of people with loud snoring, the vibration of the tongue against the throat is what makes the noise. This is commonly more of a problem in people who are overweight. There are a number of different types of splint available. With the cheaper versions you mould the splint yourself and for some people this is all they need. For other people the splint works very well but is not comfortable, and in these cases a custom fitted splint is usually recommended. These vary in price and may need to be fitted by a dentist. Sometimes the splint is used while the patient looses weight and when the desired weight is achieved, the splint is no longer needed.
