This
is an operation to straighten the partition between the two nostrils
(the septum). In many people this is bent and this causes obstruction
to breathing through the nose. This has 2 effects; one is that
the airflow though the nose becomes more turbulent and the second
is it makes it more likely that you will have to breathe through
your mouth. This can lead to vibrations in the nose and throat
and therefore cause a snoring noise. The operation is done through
the nostrils so there is no scarring on the outside. The bent
bits are either removed or put into the correct position in the
middle of the nose. The skin covering is then stitched back into
place with dissolving stitches. The operation is not usually very
painful afterwards. The possible complications of the procedure
are bleeding, change in shape of the nose and septal perforation
(a hole in the partition). The success rate is very good for relieving
blocked nose 90+% but not so good for relieving snoring, 50-60%.
Having the septum straightened may make it easier to use other
snoring treatments such as a Jaw positioning device or CPAP. This
means that even though the operation may not cure the problem
it may still be worthwhile.
